Elizabeth I was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his wife Queen Anne Boleyn. When she was born she was the heir presumptive to the throne. Her older sister Mary had lost her that title when the King annulled the marriage to his first wife and Mary's mother, Catherine of Aragon. On May 19, 1536, Elizabeth's mother, Anne, was executed because the King wanted to marry Jane Seymour. Soon after Elizabeth was stripped of her birthright to the throne. When Henry VIII died, Edward became King at the age of 9. Edward only lived to the age of fifteen. His will named Lady Jane Grey to be the successor to the throne.
