Arthur was well-educated for his day, and was never characterized as sickly, despite the claims of later historians. Upon Arthur's fifteenth birthday, it was decided that the couple could marry. Catherine arrived in England, and the two were wed on 14 November 1501, ten days after first meeting. By March 1502, both were ill, and although Catherine recovered, Arthur died six months short of his sixteenth birthday. In order to keep the alliance, King Henry VII betrothed the widowed Catherine to the new heir, Prince Henry.
