The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance between:
NATO was created in 1947 at the height of the Cold War. NATO is characterized by a collective defense system, where an attack on one member nation is perceived and treated as an attack on all member nations. NATO was originally established to counter the threat of the Soviet Union, which had brought much of Eastern Europe into its communist sphere at the end of World War II.
NATO
The Korean War was the first major test of NATO as a military alliance, forcing the organization to face the possibility of coordination between communist states (Russia, China and North Korea). In 1952, NATO expanded to 96 divisions, but was later reduced with the addition of a nuclear arsenal. In 1954, the USSR asked to join NATO. Its rejection led to the creation in 1955 of the Warsaw Pact. In 1966, France left NATO over perceived slighting by the United States and Great Britain. However, France returned to NATO in 2009.
With the collapse of communism between 1989 and 1991, many questioned the continued existence of NATO. However, NATO merely shifted focus, inviting many former Warsaw Pact members into joining. NATO also created the Partnership for Peace, a program aimed at greater cooperation between NATO member nations and former Soviet republics. NATO was heavily involved in securing peace in the former Yugoslavia when that nation fell into civil war.
