The artists of the Renaissance period collectively created the "Spirit of Renaissance" in terms of the revival of Classical styles, their use of nudes, and the Christian concept contained in much of their work. The Renaissance and the artists it produced mark one of the most creative periods in history as well as the time when talented individuals made their mark across many different artistic fields.
During the Renaissance, individuals ceased to box themselves into one specialty, and instead explored many avenues of artistic and intellectual development. For example, Michelangelo was a sculptor, painter, architect, engineer, and poet. Leonardo da Vinci was also known for taking on and conquering many different facets of artistic and scientific expression. These men wanted more than just to capture a piece of life, they strove to master life at every possible turn in order to confirm their freedom of expression. Leonardo da Vinci's life-long devotion to knowledge and his efforts in art and science, best exemplify the true spirit of the Renaissance ideal of excellence in all areas, echoing his enormous legacy down through the ages. As an artist's apprentice in Florence, Leonardo became familiar with tools for the activities such as lifting, carrying, and digging. This was the starting point for his interest in mechanical things, which ranged from the link-chain-driving bicycle, to military devices, to studies in automotive engineering. Like technological development today, Leonardo's goal was to make machines work faster and easier.
