The Achaemenid Empire was the first major empire in ancient Persian. In fact, it is occasionally referred to as the First Persian Empire. This empire was consequential not only for contemporary reasons, but also for its far-reaching historical influences.

Beginnings of Achaemenid Empire

The Achaemenid Empire arose in the 6th century B. C. It formulated in modern day Iran, when groups of the following nomadic persons settled there and cooperated to overthrow the Assyrians, the dominant empire and socio-political force in Iran at that time.

These groups of nomadic tribes and tenuous cities succeeded in toppling the Assyrian Empire.

After working in conjunction with one another, the Persians, under Cyrus the Great, began conquering the other groups, spreading from Persis throughout the Middle East, and further to the Balkans in Eastern Europe and the Indus Valley in Asia Minor.

Significance of the Achaemenid Empire

The Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great was significant for many reasons. One of these is that they were the first empire which tried to govern disparate ethnic groups based on equal responsibilities and rights. As long as the people paid taxes and obeyed the laws, there was no special privileges for any one ethnic group.
