During the centuries that followed, the Dominican Republic was taken over by Haiti on several occasions until 1844 when the Dominican Republic gained its independence from Haiti . A variety of governments, most of which were not representative, followed in the years after 1844 until 1996 when the Dominican Republic finally elected its own government for the first time through a free election by its people 230.2 despite the fact that the country drafted a new constitution in 1966.

The capital city of Santo Domingo is located south-centrally along the southern coast of the country.
