Asia is one of the seven continents of the world. It is the largest and most populated continent, covering 30 percent of Earth's land area. Since there is no physical separation between Asia and Europe, the boundaries of Asia are frequently culturally determined. Asia is generally defined as lying to the east of the Suez Canal, the Bosporus Strait and the Ural Mountains, stretching to the Pacific Ocean.
History of Asia
It was the ancient Greeks who first devised the border between Asia and Europe as lying along the Bosporus Strait, which cuts through the modern-day city of Istanbul, Turkey. In 1730, the land border of the Ural Mountains was proposed after the extension of the Russian Empire under Peter the Great. In the southeast, the border between Asia and Oceania is usually placed somewhere in the Malay Archipelago.
A minority of geographers view Asia, Europe, and Africa as one large continent, since there is no physical separation between these three areas. Others see Europe as a peninsula of Asia.
Asia has a wide range of geography and cultures, with climates ranging from the Arctic to the tropical. Asia is also home to the tallest mountain range, the Himalayas, which formed when the Indian subcontinent drifted into Asia. Asia is also home to the world's two most populous nations, China and India. There are 49 total nations on the continent of Asia.
