It has been claimed that during the 1920s, fashion entered into the modern era. Both men and women abandoned many of the restrictive fashions of previous eras in favor of more comfortable clothing. Popularly known as the age of the flapper, 1920s fashion can be divided into two distinct periods. During the early years of the 1920s, popular reception of change was slow. 1920's Fashion for Women

For women, younger women began adopting styles based on looser, and more comfortable sportswear, such as the following:

• Dresses were of a silhouette style, with shorter, pleated skirts.
• The flapper dress, which flattened the bust line with a straight line, created a "boyish" look for women's fashion.
• Hairstyles were generally short, including the famous bob hairstyle, and almost always covered the forehead.

• Women also began to wear trousers for the first time. Fashion icon Coco Chanel was one of the first to popularize this trend.

In men's fashion during the 1920s, shorter, high-waisted suit jackets became common, with narrow lapels buttoned up high. Casual wear, such as knickers, sweaters, and shorts were acceptable. Men continued to wear hats, with fedoras, bowlers, or trilby hats becoming popular among the middle classes. Summer straw boater hats were also representative of 1920s fashion for men.
