For Whom the Bell Tolls is a 1940 novel by American writer Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway based the story on his experiences as a correspondent for the North American Newspaper Alliance, covering the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. Much of the novel was written in Cuba, and tells the story of Robert Jordan, an American fighting for the anti-fascist Republicans. Hemingway used three different types of characters for the book:

  • Wholly fictionalized
  • Semi-fictionalized versions of real people
  • Historical actors in the Spanish Civil War.

The novel is considered by many critics to be among Hemingway’s best.

For Whom the Bell Tolls

Robert Jordan travels to Spain to fight in the International Brigades against Franco’s fascists. Experienced with dynamite, Jordan is assigned to a group of guerrillas and tasked with blowing up a bridge. Set during four days and three nights in the Sierra de Guadarrama Mountains between Madrid and Segovia, Jordan becomes infatuated with Maria, a young woman whose life has been shattered by the fascists. Jordan also clashes with Pablo, the guerrilla leader, who does not want to risk the lives of his men.

Jordan figures out a way to remotely detonate the bridge, but is wounded when a tank shoots his horse out from under him. Wounded, he says goodbye to Maria and waits for the approaching enemy, hoping to buy the guerrilla band some time. The novel ends with Jordan, in pain, waiting in ambush.
