In 1848, one of the most famous conventions that dealt with women's suffrage was held in Seneca Falls, New York. The Seneca Falls Convention was focused, however, on temperance objectives and humane working conditions for women. Thus, when the vote was held at this meeting on whether women should receive the privilege, it barely passed. This might be expected because many of the attendees were there because of their religious beliefs regarding temperance. It is likely that many of these same individuals held a conservative stance on the notion of women voting as well.

Originally, the convention in New York in 1848 was being held to discuss many of the rights that were being denied to women. Ownership of property after marriage, the inability to testify against their husbands if they so desired, and the denial of education to become a practicing lawyer or doctor were but a few of the problems discussed. But it was the beginning of the women's suffrage movement. It is interesting to note that the year 1848 appears to be an important year for the women's suffrage movement around the world. Strong women's movements were also being formed in France and in Germany during this same year.
