In 1867, John Stuart Mill attempted to introduce women's suffrage to Parliament. In many countries during the 19th century, women began to organize to demand the right to vote. In 1893, New Zealand became the first nation to do so, followed by Finland in 1906.

In 1966, the National Organization for Women (NOW) was founded in the United States, with the express purpose of bringing about equality. During the 1970s, NOW fought unsuccessfully for an Equal Rights Amendment. A 2011 Newsweek survey placed the United States eighth in the world on the issue of women's rights; Iceland was ranked first. Pakistan, Ethiopia, and Sudan came in as the worst three nations in the world for quality of life for women.
