In May of 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down a decision outlawing segregation in public education . Thus the civil rights movement began in America.

The Black Nationalist Movement took up where the Civil Rights Movement left off. While the Civil Rights Movement was aimed at reforming the aspects of the American society that led to social injustice, the Black Nationalist Movement addressed specific problems faced by the blacks living in slum conditions in the major urban areas of the United States.

The Black Panthers took up where the Civil Rights Movement and the SCLC and SNCC left off by bringing awareness to the plight of Black Americans in the ghettos as well as the levels of inequality that still existed. This movement was led by several individuals, the most widely known being Malcolm X . Unlike the Civil Rights Movement where the majority of the violence was instigated by whites, the Black Nationalist Movement was characterized by armed blacks determined to win justice by any means possible.
