Racism is one of the most devastating factors associated with modern society. Racism destroys the spirit of cooperation, pits neighbor against neighbor and leads to a loss of productivity in the workplace. Racial discrimination destroys what many strive to build. It holds that the quality of man is based his race, on the color of his skin rather than on his actions. Racism leads to hate, war, and the worst forms of social injustice. On the other hand, a world without racism is one in which the benefits of love, benevolence, forgiveness, cooperation, kindness and understanding would flourish.

Racism and Civil Rights

Racism did not end with the Civil War in the U.S. or even with the Civil Rights Movement. While actions based on racism were covered by laws following these two events, the laws failed to replace the hatred in the hearts of many. The concept of race is defined by Merriam-Webster's online dictionary as, "a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race". According to that while historic forms of racism involved the use of slavery or preventing minorities from living, working, and eating in certain areas, current forms of racism are just as destructive to society as a whole.

Current forms of racism involve police pulling minority citizens over simply due to the color of their skin or the car they drive. It involves minority citizens being followed and closely watched by security guards during visits to the mall. In the worse cases, it involves parents teaching their children to avoid those of a particular race or color simply because they are not white.

Forms of Racism:

  • Individual racism
  • Cultural racism
  • Institutional racism
  • Systemic racism

Racism is spread by way of individuals as well as organized groups. In 2003, there were more than 751 hate groups active in the United States. These groups and individuals make no attempt to understand those of minority races. Instead, they hang on to embedded and destructive ideas of whites as the superior race. These ideas destroy attempts to bond communities, work environments, and society in general. In spite of laws against racial discrimination, they still prevent America from making the progress needed to truly evolve into the humane and loving country it reports to be.
