Many different issues, such as same-sex marriage, have come to symbolize LGBT rights in recent years.
For centuries, many western nations criminalized homosexual activity. In late Victorian England, for example, Oscar Wilde was convicted of gross indecency at the same time many were pushing for the repeal of such laws. With the 1960s, the "gay liberation" movement gained ground in the US, initiating a radicalization based on other social movements of the time.
LGBT Rights and the 1980's
The emergence of AIDS in the 1980s led to a new phase in the LGBT movement. In fact, the term "LGBT" emerged during that decade, as coalitions began pushing for acceptance and equality in society. LGBT includes the following groups:
- Lesbians
- Gays
- Bisexuals
- Transgendered
In 2001, the Netherlands became the first nation to allow same-sex marriage. In 2003, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down anti-sodomy laws with the Lawrence v. Texas decision.
In 2003, the U.S. Army allowed open homosexuals to serve in the military, reversing earlier policy. While opposition remains, advocates for LGBT rights are making significant gains in the United States and around the world, as more people have come to see that such discrimination is arbitrary and unnecessary.
