Abortion research papers show that no issue, in the history of the United States, has divided individuals so dramatically as the issue of abortion. Overall, the abortion controversy can be broken down into two distinct viewpoints in an abortion term paper: those who oppose abortion and call themselves pro-life , and those who favor abortion and call themselves pro-choice . Abortion research papers show that abortion rights activists contend that women should have the ability to control their reproductive organs and that means the right to terminate unwanted pregnancies.
Pro-life activists contend, however, that a fetus' right to life is more important than the mother's right to control her reproduction. Despite the fact that pro-life activists have gained a substantial footing in the political arena, the fact remains, that, to date, they have been unable to change public opinion. Ultimately it is because most individuals in this country believe that a woman's right to control her own body is a moral, ethical and legal right that should be upheld.
Abortion term papers show that the pro-life verses pro-choice abortion issue has become such an issue of controversy in this country because, as reported by abortion term papers in a report released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showed that in 1997, 1,184,758 legal induced abortions were performed in the United States; this number accounts for nearly one-quarter of all pregnancies that year. The report further showed that from 1980 to 1990, the number of legal induced abortions increased overall by 10 percent. Although the numbers receded by 2 to 5 percent in the 1990s, one-quarter of all pregnancies ending in abortion is not very encouraging. The CDC also noted that the majority of women who obtained legal abortions in 1997 were white and unmarried and in 98 percent of all abortions, curettage was used to end the pregnancy.
