The lymphatic system is a part of the circulatory system, comprised of a network of conduits that carry lymph, a clear fluid, towards the heart. Lymph is recycled blood plasma that is lacking protein. Olaus Rudbeck and Thomas Bartholin first discovered the lymphatic system in the 17th century, although each of these scientists was working independently.

Lymph nodes are organized collections of lymphoid tissue, through which lymph passes. The spleen is essentially a large lymph node, whose basic function is a blood filter.
Lymphedema is a swelling caused by the accumulation of lymph fluid, and may affect the face or limbs. Infections may cause swelling of the lymph nodes, but they are also vulnerable to diseases such as Hodgkin's disease or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, cancer of the lymph system.
