Could it wipe out all human life? Several instances have been noted in which genetically engineered food items have resulted in widespread illness and even death. For example, in 1989, 37 people were killed and 1,500 were left permanently disabled by an unknown illness that was linked to "the food supplement tryptophan, which had been contaminated with a new toxin when it was produced by genetically engineered bacteria." However, this was an isolated incident and the benefits verses the costs must be weighed.
