The cardiovascular system is far more than the human body's blood distribution network. It is an organ system that conducts the following:
- Blood

The cardiovascular system includes both the circulatory system, which moves blood around the body and the lymphatic system, which circulates lymph, which is formed in the intestines and contains white blood cells. Blood contains red blood cells, plasma, platelets and white blood cells, moved through the body via pulmonary circulation. The human heart is the engine of pulmonary circulation. Red blood cells are oxygenated in the heart, travel to the body's cells, pick up waste, and return via the veins.

The cardiovascular system in human beings is a closed system; blood never leaves the network on it own accord. The human heart is comprised of four chambers: an atrium and ventricle for distributing and returning blood. Blood returns to the heart via the superior vena cava into the right atrium. Moves into the right ventricle before being pumped into the pulmonary artery into the lungs for re-oxygenation. Blood returns into the left atrium and then moves into the left ventricle before exiting the heart via the aorta to the rest of the body.
