  4. Does survival of the fittest contradict with Christianity?

Charles Darwin introduced the concept of the survival of the fittest at a time when science was just beginning to understand the link between man and nature/man and animal behavior. Since that time, sociological programs, political agendas and human ethical debates have sought to discern where in the human evolutionary chain the concept of at what point survival of the fittest ends and human compassion begins. The issue is far more complicated than political agendas or sociological theory is able to provide answers to, in as much as how much of Darwin's survival of the fittest theory applies to the current human condition. How does the current sociological and political state of the United States support or refute Darwin's contention of the survival of the fittest? It can be surmised that Darwin's theory can be applied to humans in theory but as far as in practice, survival of the fittest cannot be part of the human condition if society is able to function humanely.

In order to establish the legitimacy of Darwin's theory of the survival of the fittest, defining the theory as it applies to man is necessary. Darwin begins his chapter on Survival of the Fittest by establishing a distinct connection between all organic life, humans included.

Let it also be borne in mind how infinitely complex and close-fitting are the mutual relations of all organic beings to each other and to their physical conditions of life; and consequently what infinitely varied diversities of structure might be of use to each being under changing conditions of life.

Basically, Darwin asserts, when it comes right down to it, physiologically, man is fundamentally the same many other of his animal ancestors. Even further, the fact that man has achieved his standing gradually, and that over time, sympathy, his kindness, not only to his own species but toward all living things, his considerable intellect, which has taken lengthy strides in unlocking the secrets of the solar system; even with all of these things - man cannot deny his physiology.

Darwin asserts that survival of the fittest will propagate the best outcome for man due to a cyclical desire to benefit the self through the community. Man is a social animal and, according to Darwin, "In social animals it will adapt the structure of each individual for the benefit of the whole community, if the community profits by the selected change." Thus in theory, social programs that provide for the betterment of society should provide a foundation for the betterment of the species.

At the core of Social Darwinism and the theory of Natural Selection is the notion of the survival of the fittest. In research papers on the concept of the survival of the fittest in a thriving economy, two things are necessary:

  1. A competitive market
  2. A division of labor

It is assumed that competition forces firms to make better products. But, this requires enhanced efficiency; thus, labor is specialized. Employees in a product assembly line all have their specialized trades: welders, operators, engineers, managers. Specializing enhances efficiency by doing what you are good at and doing it well on a consistent basis.

The theory is then extrapolated to entire markets and ultimately nations. That is why so many favor trade agreements like NAFTA and GATT. Each country specializes in what they are good at and trades for what they lack.

Charles Darwin uses his survival of the fittest concept in his book the Origin of Species. He argues that organisms with specialized traits are always more effective at surviving due to the specialized trait. For this reason, plants evolved such that pistils and stamens (that is, the male and female characteristics) appear on totally different plants of the same species. Darwin calls this the "physiological division of labor".
