It is no longer deniable that the planet is heating up at an accelerated rate. Since 1900, the Earth has increased by 7C, with much of that acceleration coming since the 1980's.
The hottest year on record has caused unprecedented weather events.
- Flooding in the US and Pakistan
- A heat wave in Moscow has caused thousands of deaths due to lack of air conditioning
- Massive wildfires that have caused evacuations and displacement if thousands of people
In order to track the hottest year on record, many measurements are used. First and most reliable is satellite recording of sea surface temperature. Scientists also use land and sea stations to record daily, monthly and yearly averages. Many of these methods have been under attack.
The Guardian newspaper in the UK has reported in the long term effort by fossil fuel polluters to cast doubt on Climate Change. They wish the media would not report that this is the hottest year on record. they have hired the very same firms used by Big Tobacco to confuse the link between cancer and smoking. This does not bode well for the future of the planet. Most media has not reported about this effort to influence the science of Climate Change. In fact, many major newspapers have eliminated their science sections and writers. This is causing major problems with a lack of reliable public information. Without an informed population, it seems nearly impossible to develop the will to make the necessary sacrifices.
It is well known in the scientific community that Climate Change is caused by human emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Yet many in the public still doubt the seriousness of the issue. Hopefully this year being the hottest year on record will cause people to wake up to our changing planet and take the necessary steps needed to meet this challenge. It is up to our politicians to take a stand and not give into cheap political gains at the expense of the future of the planet. Given the state of our current political environment, I have a hard time seeing how this can happen.
