While concerns over issues such as the global war on terrorism, continued unrest in the Middle East, and a slumping domestic economy have dominated the national consciousness for the past several years, global warming and climate change are the issues with the greatest potential impact for mankind in the 21st century and beyond, though the debate as to how and to what degree continues.

First, to briefly define the terms climate change and global warming, climate change refers to an alteration, natural or otherwise, of a region (or the Earth's) average weather. The term global warming refers to the idea that greenhouse gases (molecules in the atmosphere which absorb a portion of the Earth's emitted radiation) contribute to a greenhouse effect which causes the Earth's temperature to rise on a global scale. The United States Environmental Protection Agency reports that the Earth's average surface temperature has risen approximately 1 degree Fahrenheit over the past 100 years. As a result, the snow cover in the Northern hemisphere and polar ice cap coverage have both decreased. Additionally, the liquidation of the elements, along with a corresponding reduction of floating ice in the oceans, has translated into a four to eight inch rise in sea levels.

Though these changes are discussed in relatively small increments, a few degrees or inches, the consequences of these environmental alterations are potentially monumental.

  • Weather and precipitation patterns
  • Crop yields
  • Forest patterns
  • Water supplies
  • Human, animal, and ecosystem health

With in the United States, the effect of global warming will be a trend towards more extreme weather. That is, moderate weather patterns will give way towards weather patterns that will be drier or wetter, with much more potential towards violent weather incidents, such as hurricanes or violent thunderstorms. To recognize the potential consequences of these types of meteorological change could bring, one only needs to remember the devastation wrought by the particularly active hurricane season of 2005, the type of event that could become commonplace.

How can global warming potentially be combated? There answers are numerous, though a significant portion of the scientific community believes it may already be too late. One potential weapon in the battle against global warming is personal action. By taking steps to reduce personal energy consumption and maximize energy efficiency, individual energy consumers can have a significant impact on the amount of greenhouse gases generated. These steps can range from the relatively small, such as choosing to utilize energy efficient fluorescent bulbs over inefficient conventional bulbs, to the relatively significant, such as downsizing the size of their personal vehicle. And the issue of motor vehicles is not insignificant, as motor vehicles by themselves account for nearly 25% of the United States' annual emission of carbon dioxide, a primary greenhouse gas. Furthermore, this type of personal action can have significant "ripple" effect against global warming. When a consumer makes a choice to utilize an energy efficient product, he or she is helping to increase the demand of that product, thereby increasing pressure on manufacturers and industry to produce more energy efficient offerings
