Romantic Era Research Papers

Gothic Writing During the Romantic Era

Edgar Allen Poe’s works are, to many, the epitome of Gothic writing. In Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, is found a strong Gothic sense of desolation with “During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day...” On the other hand, Poe also wrote gothic-style poetry, with The Raven being among his best known. Though Walt Whitman was born and lived after most well known transcendentalist, much his poetry embodied true transcendental thought. In Song of Myself, Whitman seeks to relate his soul to the universe. For example, in line 1285 of Song of Myself Whitman says “In the faces of men and women I see God, and in my own face in the glass”. Historical events, such as the Civil War, also influenced Whitman to write non-transcendental poems such as his collection known as Drum Taps. Emerson and Thoreau are often compared and contrasted in romantic era research papers.
