World Council of Churches
Religion research papers on Christianity may discuss the World Council of Churches. The World Council of Churches is an ecumenical group, founded in 1948, which includes many mainstream Christian denominations with the exception of the Roman Catholic Church. Early Years of The World Council of Churches
The WCC was proposed in 1937, but the Second World War delayed its establishment. In 1947, delegates from 147 churches met in Amsterdam, officially holding the first WCC Assembly the following year. Assemblies are held every seven to eight years, last meeting in Brazil in 2006. The Roman Catholic Church, the world's largest Christian church, is not a member of the WCC, but it does send observers to the Assemblies and has worked closely with the WCC, and has members on the Faith and Order Commission.
World Council of Churches and Issues
The various WCC member churches work together on a number of spiritual issues, ecumenical, evangelical and social. One of its newest programs include a campaign to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa and the Justice, Peace and Creation Commission, which holds environmental issues in its mandate. The WCC headquarters are located in Geneva, Switzerland and its members claim to include some 590 million people in 150 countries.
