- Characteristics
- Personality
Later in life, the ability to answer the age-old question of 'who am I' becomes more important as it directly correlates to how an individual chooses to live his or her life. Most individuals strive to live an authentic life. In being authentic, one can be truthful and compassionate with ease. There is a deep yearning within each person to know without a doubt that he or she is beyond what can be observed on the surface. Self identity tends to change and expand throughout an individual's life. What one chooses to identify with during childhood can invariably change as an individual enters adulthood.
The basis of self identity is usually formed as a result of what an individual is told or has witnessed from his or her parents and caregivers. However, as life unfolds, people begin to discover their unique traits and as such, a new self identity begins to form. Some people solely identify with their occupation, or the role he or she plays in their respective families. The perception an individual has of themselves and what he or she is capable of achieving relates to self identity. Through identifying the limited beliefs that were formed in adolescence, an individual can empower themselves in preparation for the future. Self identity can be a hindrance or a blessing if viewed with the right perspective.
