Carl Jung, a Swedish psychologist known for his theory of personal unconscious, believed that the human mind could be understood by looking at archetypes. He modeled these archetypes after mythical characters. These archetypes show the human experience and human evolution. Jung established twelve different archetypes as his models. These twelve are further subdivided into three different sets Ego, Soul, and Self. People tend to have one dominate archetype, but might also show aspects of other archetypes.

The Ego Category of Jung's Archetypes

The archetypes classified under the Ego category are:

  • The Innocent
  • The Orphan/Regular Guy or Gal
  • The Hero
  • The Caregiver

The Innocent wants to be happy. They have an optimistic outlook on life and want to do good. Those that are classified as the Orphan/Regular Guy or Gal archetype want to belong and be apart of a group. The Hero wants to prove his or her worth by showing evidence of his or her bravery. Finally, The Caregiver wants to help others and give generously of themselves.

The Soul Category of Jung's Archetypes

The archetypes classified as The Soul archetypes include:

  • The Explorer
  • The Rebel
  • The Lover
  • The Creator

The Explorer seeks to find new undiscovered places and things. The Rebel seeks to make changes by breaking rules and making statements. The Lover wants to be in relationship with others. The Lover's greatest fear is to be alone. The Creator uses his or her imagination to cast an artistic vision.

The Self Category of Jung's Archetypes

Finally, the archetypes classified as The Self Types are:

  • The Jester
  • The Sage
  • The Magician
  • The Ruler

The Jester wants to enjoy life and take risks. The Sage's purpose in life is to find truth in the world. The Magician uses the laws of nature to make things happen. This category would include inventors, healers, and medicine men. Finally, The Ruler desires control. The ruler likes to be in charge and finds it difficult to turn power over to others.
