Pride and Prejudice

The marriage of Charlotte Lucas in Pride and Prejudice becomes a litmus for Austin’s assertion in Emma that love should be the foundation of marriage, not money. In a research paper on Pride and Predjudice, a student may want to contrast Austin directly to the glorious union of Knightly and Emma by illustrating what a bad marriage involves.  Mr. Collins came to town to buy a wife. When Lizzy refuses him, he goes next door, where Charlotte, who is quite intelligent, but not very pretty or lively, takes the one chance she has for marriage.  Pride and PrejudiceCharlotte is a levelheaded woman who must marry into money, for she has none of her own.

Charlotte comments to Elizabeth on the fate of marriage “I am not romantic, you know.  I never was.  I ask only a comfortable home; and considering Mr. Collin’s character, connections, and situation in life, I am convinced that my chance of happiness with him is as fair as most people can boast on entering the marriage state”.  Charlotte knows Mr. Collins does not love her because he has recently proposed to another woman and was rejected. One of the compromises is that Elizabeth and Charlottes friendship changes and grows apart, just as Charlotte predicts that marriages do. Austin does not punish Charlotte but gives her a reasonably happy life, especially when her husband is not around. See how easy it is to write a research paper on Pride and Predjudice!
