Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States. He was also one of many Civil War officers that had the privilege of holding the position of the President of United States. The inaugural address of Ulysses S. Grant was given to the American people on Thursday March 4, 1869. This address was delivered on the East Portico of the Capital Building and preceded by the oath of office administered by Chief Justice Solomon Chase. Many themes were addressed in President Grant's inaugural address. The first theme that was addressed by Grant was the importance of bringing unity to the country following the Civil War. The second theme that was addressed was the surplus of national debt plaguing the county. In this section of his address, Grant and his administration revealed strategies to Congress and the American people that would be implemented to address these issues. Maintaining national honor was a third theme addressed in Ulysses S. Grant's inaugural address. Grant insisted that the United States had become extremely influential on a global basis and it was the duty of the country and the people to maintain its national honor to safeguard its stability, security, and pride. The final themes that were addressed were a stronger focus being placed of foreign and domestic policies.
