Revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia encouraged rebels in Libya to rise against Gaddafi's leadership in February 2011. As turmoil increased between Gaddafi's forces and Libyan rebels, the world began to pay more attention to battles taking place between the factions. Events unfolded as follows:
- Gaddafi's forces lost the Battle of Tripoli, an important confrontation that set the stage for his eventual removal from power,
- Gaddafi's forces retreated to Sirte, a city in which he still held significant influence.
- Following the loss at Tripoli, the National Transitional Council took control of most cities in Libya.
- On October 20th, 2011, National Transitional Council forces captured Gaddafi in Sirte.
- Shortly thereafter, rumors began to spread of the former leader's death. Within hours, these rumors were confirmed.
Gaddafi's Death and Capture
Eventually, cell phone images and videos were released of Gaddafi's capture. While Libyans celebrated, the video immediately sparked controversy within the UN Rights Office. The video seemed to indicate that Gaddafi was executed after his capture. Although the anger that may have lead to an execution is somewhat understandable, many influential people around the world, including Senator John McCain, believe that Gaddafi should have stood trial so that he could have been held accountable for the crimes he committed against his own people.
