Immigrant Rights

Immigrants to any country are not without legal rights. There are a number of groups in the United States, both inside and outside the government, working towards the protection of immigrant rights and the maintenance of civil liberties for those legally in the country.
The primary government agency responsible for immigration in the United States is Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). It is the job of ICE to identify, arrest, and deport undocumented immigrants. Frequently, ICE conducts raids, and has gained a notorious reputation for violating the Fourth and Fifth Amendments during such actions. As a result, the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) developed "Red Cards," written in Spanish that specifically instruct how immigrants, both legal and illegal, can exercise their constitutional rights.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is another agency that works towards protecting immigrant rights. According to the ACLU, 83% of those deported from the United States are not given a hearing before a judge before being evicted from the country. The ACLU believes that there is an unconstitutional lack of right in the criminal justice system for immigrants, in which the government is not force to show that detention is necessary. The end result is that the U.S. spends $1.84 billion annually detaining immigrants. Under the ideals of the Constitution, even immigrants should have rights.
