About Rene Descartes
Rene Descartes (1596-1650) was a French philosopher and mathematician who is best remembered for the phrase Cogito ergo sum ("I think therefore I exist"). While Descartes never actually wrote that particular phrase, it is an accurate summation of one of his most profound philosophical breakthroughs. As a result, Descartes is often called the Father of Modern Philosophy.
Descartes' Work
Descartes, born in France, was educated at the Jesuit College Royal Henry-Le-Grand at La Fleche, where he studied mathematics, including the works of Galileo. In 1616, he earned a law degree, but left the profession in order to join the army and study military engineering. In 1619, Descartes had three "visions" and began applying analytical geometry to philosophy. In 1622, he produced his first major work: Rules for the Direction of the Mind.
Descartes then spent much of the next two decades living in the Netherlands under various names, publishing works in mathematics and philosophy. Descartes stressed the use of reason in order to develop science, deriving the single principle that thought exists. This is the basis of cogito ergo sum. Descartes stated that the only thing one could be sure of was one's own existence. In 1650, Descartes traveled to Stockholm, Sweden in order to tutor Queen Christina, dying at the home of the French ambassador from pneumonia.
