Stoicism is a philosophy that dates back to the early 3rd century BCE. Founded by Zeno of Citium in Athens, Stoicism taught that destructive emotions came about through errors in judgment and that the true intellectual would not suffer from such emotions. Stoicism, as a philosophy, was particularly popular during the Roman Empire.
The Stoics believed the following tenets:
- How a person lived their life was far more important than their words
- Roman Stoic philosophers, including Seneca and Epictetus maintained that virtue was enough to make a person happy.
- Stoicism taught that ethics was the driving thrust of human knowledge, and that in order to overcome destructive emotions the sage needed to develop self-control.
- Only an unbiased thinker could understand reason.
Stoicism - Deterministic Philosophy
Stoicism is a deterministic philosophy. Everything, according to the Stoics, is corporal. Knowledge can be gained through the use of reason, and truth can be distinguished from fallacy.
In recent times, the word "Stoic" has come to mean "unemotional." The ancient Stoics, however, did not seek to reduce or eliminate emotion, but rather sought to transform the individual through self-discipline and inner calm. Such things as logic and reflection were employed in order to achieve this state of detachment. The Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius was one of the most famous adherents of Stoicism.
