Early Analytic Philosophy
A few of the earliest analytic philosophers are:
- Bertrand Russell - One of the earliest proponents of analytic philosophy was Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), who rejected Hegelianism as obscure and idealistic.
- G.W.F Hegel - Hegelianism is the philosophy of G.W.F. Hegel, summed up by the phrase "the rational alone is real."
- Alfred North Whitehead - Russell, in contrast, along with Alfred North Whitehead, attempted to show that mathematics could be reduced to fundamental logic. The Principa Mathematica by Whitehead and Russell is considered to be an early landmark of analytic philosophy.
Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) was the Austrian-born protege of Russell, whose only published book Tracatus Logico-Philosophicus is one of the landmarks of 20th century philosophy, attempting to identify the relationship between language and reality.
Wittgenstein's work was expanded into logical positivism by several German philosophers, who attempted to develop an empirical account of knowledge. Following World War II, analytic philosophy moved towards ordinary language analysis, showing that philosophical problems are the result of misunderstanding language.
