As one of the most profound nursing professionals, Madeleine Leininger is responsible for developing the concept of trans-cultural nursing, fusing the principles of the nursing profession with various cultural elements. On the whole, transcultural nursing is designed to provide all peoples, regardless of their geographic location or socioeconomic status, with universal care. This is designed to ensure all individuals have access to basic health care and do not suffer from diseases or disorders in one area that might have been eradicated in another. By moving across these cultural bounds, she is emphasizing our shared humanity and our shared need for positive health.
However, she was acutely aware of the unique cultural needs of various groups, and incorporated this into her theory as well. In the process of providing individuals throughout the world with these basic health care services, she strove to do so in a culturally-meaningful way. Language differences were respected; gender norms and sexual behaviors were understood and adhered to. Social hierarchies based on age, occupation, and other statues were also considered when providing care to individuals from other culture. Religious and political traditions were incorporated with health care principles, especially with regards to end-of-life care. By demonstrating a respect for these, and other, cultural elements, Leininger and her adherents were able to create a cultural discourse that improved the health and quality of life for all peoples.
