Nursing Values

Nursing is a dynamic and demanding profession in which core values are intended to shape practice. Nursing values are any set of beliefs that direct the work of nurses. While there are many different theories on nursing, some of the common core values are caring, professionalism, respect, integrity, diversity, and excellence.

Caring is often listed as the first, most fundamental value in the nursing profession. Nurses must learn to have consideration for the whole person, commit towards a common good, and reach out to the most vulnerable. Caring is often described as the essence of humanity, that which supports a culture in which individuals are nurtured.

Professionalism encourages personal development through accountability, responsibility, dependability, and commitment to becoming the best. Mutual respect comes into force when dealing with individuals at all levels, treating people with respect, exemplifying human relations skills, and acting in a professional manner at all times.

Integrity refers to the ways in which nurses act in an ethical manner, actively promoting core values. Diversity, important in any workplace, is supposed to mirror the larger population served by nurses. Excellence, for nursing, is the commitment to professional development that encourages leadership and innovation in the field.
