The first real treatment for malaria came with the medicine quinine, which comes from the bark of the cinchona tree. Cinchona bark was used as a malaria treatment as early as the 1640s, but it was not until 1820 that scientist isolated quinine, which was used extensively for the next century.
In modern times, malaria treatment includes a host of antimalarial medications. Chloroquine has been the most widely used antimalarial, but has recently proven less effective, due to the rise of drug-resistant strains of malaria parasites. The first step in malaria treatment includes a course of oral medications, general a combination of drugs designed to decrease drug resistance. More severe cases of malaria must be treated with intravenous medication, including the drug artesunate. Severe malaria must be treated in a hospital in order to monitor symptoms such as the management of high fevers.
