One of the more revolutionary medical advances in the 20th century was that of birth control. Allowing individuals to chose whether to get pregnant or limit the size of their families has liberated women and given them more control over their reproductive abilities. However, each method of birth control has its pros and cons.

Types of Birth Control

Types of birth control include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Hormonal Methods
  • Intrauterine Devices
  • Barrier Methods
  • Natural Family Planning
  • Permanent Birth Control
  • Emergency Contraception

One of the most popular and well-known forms of birth control is The Pill. The Pill, as it is popularly known, is a form of hormonal control. Benefits include its ability to regulate irregular periods, lighten heavy periods and minimize premenstrual symptoms. Cons include the fact that the Pill must be taken at the same time every day in order to be effective. Improper use of the Pill may result in 8 out of every 100 women getting pregnant.

One of the oldest forms of birth control is the rhythm method, in which women chart their menstrual cycle to know when they are and are not fertile. One major pro of this method is that it is natural and non-hormonal. On the con side, women with irregular cycles may not be able to use this method, and it still results in about a 25 percent pregnancy rate.

Vaginal rings are an increasing popular form of birth control. The major pro is that these are inserted once a month, making them easier to remember than the Pill. However, women must be comfortable inserting the device in order to use it effectively.
