Gastric Dilation Volvulus

Gastric Dilation Volvulus is also known as twisted stomach or gastric torsion. An excess of gas that stretches the stomach and makes the stomach turn causes this condition. Deep chested dog breeds are most susceptible to this condition. In all cases of GDV, dogs have a dysfunction of the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach and an obstruction of outflow through the pylorus. Other causes can be eating too much dry food that expands in the stomach, eating too much, drinking too much water in a short period of time before or after hard exercise.

The symptoms for this condition can be hard to separate form other canine illnesses. A dog might appear to be uncomfortable while standing. There might be distention of the stomach and the dog might have a hard time breathing. It is also common for a dog suffering from GDV to retch. Cardiac arrhythmias are common in dogs with GDV.

A veterinarian must diagnose GDV if significant symptoms are present. It is a serious condition and requires immediate response. If left untreated, GDV can be fatal in minutes. The first step a vet will take is a physical exam. This will allow the doctor to check for a distended stomach. X-Rays might also be required and will show the distention is due to gas or another cause. Depending on the specific case, the doctor may decide to treat using intravenous fluid therapy or surgery may be required.

The condition can be preventable. A surgery is required that attaches the stomach wall to the body which will prevent the stomach from turning or twisting when iti s filled with air.
