Cerebral infarction falls under the heading stroke. According to many research papers the term cerebral infarction can be one or all of the following:

Cerebral infarction means that part of the brain has become damaged as a result of insufficient blood flow to a particular area of the brain; the vessel carrying the blood supply has become blocked and can no longer supply the brain with needed oxygen and glucose. In the past the term cerebral embolus was used for to describe a situation in which a clot suddenly blocked a vessel in the brain. Medical professional used to assume that the clot came from the left side of the heart, but recent research has revealed that hardening of the arteries in the neck (arteriosclerosis) has been found to be the most dominant cause of emboli. The term cerebral thrombosis was used when the onset of the stroke was less sudden and the clot appeared to form at the site of the blockage.
Cerebral Infarction
Medically, cerebral infarction is defined as "an area of the brain in which the blood flow has fallen below the critical level necessary to maintain tissue viability". In the case of cerebral infarction, if blood supply is not restored to the site of blockage within minutes, the affected brain tissue dies (or becomes infracted). In most cases the cause of infarction is not known (either embolism or thrombosis) but medical researchers have identified a number of factors that can contribute to the occurrence of the condition:
- Thickening of the blood due to an increase in red blood cells
- Cholesterol and fatty deposits in the artery (atherosclerosis).
- Inflammation of the arteries (arteritis) and veins (phlebitis).
