Cerebral hemorrhage is also recognized under the broader term stroke. Hemorrhage into the brain, commonly caused by uncontrolled high blood pressure, is one of the leading causes of stroke. In this condition, the walls of the artery supplying blood to the brain become thicker and less elastic during episodes of high blood pressure. The forceful burst of blood traveling through the weakened artery can cause the vessel to rupture and the result is blood which leaks into the brain.Cerebral hemorrhage is currently the most serious and deadly form of stroke. In fact, as reported by the American Heart Association, while only 7.6 percent of ischaemic strokes result in death within 30 days, 37.5 percent of hemorrhagic strokes cause death within the same time period.

Onset of Cerebral Hemorrhage

While the onset of cerebral hemorrhage is typically not as sudden as cerebral infarction, there is generally a sudden onset of defective functioning:

  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting, often followed by unconsciousness.

Overall, individuals that do not loose consciousness and become comatose have a better chance at recovery than those that loose consciousness.

Although there is no set profile to describe an individual that will experience a stroke and one that will not, numerous medical research has proven that there are definitive risk factors that can play a part in increasing an individuals risk for stroke; the most notable of which is high blood pressure or hypertension. In simplest terms, blood pressure is the force of the blood as it is pumped from the heart through the arteries. When blood pressure becomes abnormally elevated, blood will be pushed through the arteries at a greater pressure, causing damage to the walls of the blood vessels. Damage increases as the arteries become hardened and narrowed over a period of time. As the damage increases, so too does the risk of stroke.

Diabetes and Cerebral Hemorrhage

In addition to high blood pressure, research has also shown that individuals with diabetes mellitus are also at an increased risk for developing stroke. With diabetes, there is an excessive level of glucose in bloodstream. Over a period of time the body's inability to metabolize this glucose properly causes damage to blood vessels, making the individual more susceptible to hardening of the arteries. As the arteries continue to harden, blood flow through the artery becomes increasingly difficult and the process can lead to completely restricted blood flow, as in the case of cerebral infarction.
