A coronavirus is a type of virus that affects humans and other mammals, as well as birds; it is named as such because of the appearance of spike-like proteins around the virus particles that form a corona, which is the Latin word for "crown" or "halo." In some animals, such as livestock, a coronavirus can manifest as diarrhea or an upper respiratory tract infection; in humans, it typically results in a respiratory tract infection, with symptoms similar to that of pneumonia. Other versions, though, can be fatal to humans, including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and COVID-19.

Covid-19

The Covid-19 version is the most recent emergence of a coronavirus, first emerging in China in late 2019 and gradually spreading throughout the world, reaching the point where the World Health Organization (WHO) classified it as a pandemic on March 11, 2020. From the onset of the disease to mid-March 2020, the major hotspots for infection have been in China, Europe, South Korea, and Iran. At the midpoint of the month, there were over 160,000 reported cases in nearly 150 distinct countries or territories.

In most cases, the virus is transmitted through contact with respiratory droplets that result from coughing or sneezing. The time between exposure and when the first symptoms manifest is usually about five days, though it can vary from just two days to nearly two weeks. The most common symptoms include fever, a dry cough, and a sore throat, though complications can escalate to pneumonia and other severe respiratory issues.

As this outbreak is one still in progress, it is unclear what the short- and long-term impact will be, but national and local governments the world over have taken drastic steps to slow the spread of the disease and mitigate some of the harsh ramifications it has on health care systems.

Although researchers examining the spread of Coronavirus have noted that individuals with compromised immune systems or other respiratory ailment may be more susceptible to the adverse consequences of the disease, overall investigators have identified healthcare workers as the most susceptible population affected by this disease.
The susceptibility of healthcare workers in this context has made them one a key target population for the development of this disease. Although notable precautions are taken to prevent the spread of infection in the population, at the present time healthcare workers experience a high degree of Covid-19 infection.

With no formidable cure and few reliable treatments, Covid-19 represents a clear threat to world public health. At the present time, control measures such as quarantine appear to be among the most effective protocols for managing the outbreak of the disease. Although control measures work well, it is evident that this process requires considerable cooperation on the part of public health agencies across the globe. If control protocols are not put in place, the possibility for widespread illness and death is quite high overall. When placed in this context, it is clear that Coronavirus is a public health threat that needs to be addressed by public health officials in the international community. Public health officials all across the international community must work together to ensure public safety.
