"The Bet" is an 1889 short story by Russian author Anton Chekhov. Chekhov is considered by many to be one of the greatest short story writers in literature, and "The Bet" is among his best and most well known.
The plot revolves around a banker and a lawyer. The banker recalls to some friends a party that the two of them had attended fifteen years previously. At that party, the topic of capital punishment was debated. The banker proposed the argument that capital punishment was far more humane than life imprisonment, while the lawyer took the opposite opinion, insisting that he would choose life imprisonment.
The banker and the lawyer then bet two million rubles that the lawyer cannot spend the next fifteen years in solitude, as if he were imprisoned. Over the next fifteen years, the lawyer spends his time:
- Reading books
- Playing the piano
- Drinking wine
- Educating himself
During the same period, the banker's fortunes seriously decline and he comes to realize that if he loses the bet, he will be bankrupt. The banker then decides to kill the lawyer, so he does not have to pay the bet.
Just as he is resolved on murder, the banker receives a note from the lawyer. The lawyer tells him that during his confinement, he has come to despise material possessions, and that knowledge is more powerful than money. The lawyer is therefore resolved to leave his prison five minutes early, so as to lose the bet.
