William Shakespeare, the greatest dramatist in the English language, if not of all time, wrote thirty-seven plays in one of three genres. Shakespeare wrote comedies, histories and tragedies, some more famous than others.
Shakespeare's Comedies
Shakespeare wrote fourteen comedies. From All's Well That Ends Well to Winter's Tale. His comedies often involve mistaken identity, but always have a happy ending. Frequent themes include young lovers seeking to be together, and a clever servant who knows more than anyone else. There are usually several elements of comedy: slapstick, puns, practical jokes and witty banter.

Shakespearian Histories
Shakespeare wrote eleven histories, generally written to favor recent English kings and reflect the glory of the ruling House of Tudor. Henry IV and Richard III are perhaps the most famous of his histories. Although some consider Macbeth, Julius Caesar and Antony and Cleopatra to be histories, they are better considered as tragedies.

Shakespearian Tragedies
