In Paradise Lost, Milton uses angels and otherworldly characters to reveal the relationships between man, morality, freedom and divinity. Two of these archangels, Raphael and Michael, are particularly interesting with respect to Milton's view of education.
Milton believed it was the duty of the educator to enlighten and guide students towards the truth, rather than attempt to fill them with information. In many respects, his students may have failed the test, but as Adam's final discourse reflects, they passed the class and Raphael fulfilled his teacher's duty in Paradise Lost.
