Southern Gothic Stands Alone
Southern Gothic is almost a stand-alone genre, dealing with incest, sexual perversion, secrets hidden from the light of day, and so on; examples are the novels of Faulkner and the plays of Tennessee Williams. Some Gothic works deal more with horror: Lovecraft's tales of creeping monstrosities from ancient times, the Mummy movies and the modern films of Carpenter. The themes of these works embody the pre-Protestant evil bursting forth to threaten the orderly world, and the beast under the skin of seemingly decent mankind. Other Gothic books and films are allied with Romance, in the manner once again of Radcliffe. The dark Lord who imprisons and mistreats the heroine is not really bad at heart, even though he seems to intend to rape or otherwise abrogate her rights; most Harlequin novels of the mid-twentieth century were concerned with this plot.
