Aldous Huxley Brave New World

Aldous Huxley Brave New World

Paper Masters can write a custom research paper on Huxley's Brave New world. Here is just a sample introduction.

Brave New World is a dystopian novel written by Aldous Huxley and first published in 1932. Considered one of the greatest dystopian novels of the 20th century, Huxley's visionary glimpse into a technological future foresaw human beings reproduced by machines and genetically engineered for positions in life.

The Setting of a Brave New World

The novel is set in the year A.F. 632 (AD 2540). Huxley created the calendar A.F. for "After Ford," indicating the position of mechanical automation in this vision of the future. Henry Ford had created the first assembly line and Huxley feared what he saw was an Americanization of Europe.

In the novel, most of the world is unified under the World State, where global population is strictly controlled. Children are created and then modified to fit into one of five castes. In the command economy, people are encouraged to consume constantly. Boredom is alleviated through the use of the drug soma, and sex is considered to be a recreational activity, entirely divorced from reproduction.

The World State in Brave New World

The World State in Brave New World is constructed according to the principles of Fordism:

  • Mass production
  • Predictability
  • Homogenization
  • The consumption of disposable goods

People are indoctrinated into Fordism from birth by the repeated playing of recording slogans during their sleep. Despite its critical acclaim, Brave New World has been subject to various attempts to censor or ban it since its publication.
