Elizabeth Barrett Browning, England's most famous female poet, achieved her notoriety through her romantic relationship and her poetic talents. At times the critics were hard on her work and her life was difficult, yet she rose above her advisories, taking full advantage of her literary gift. Born to Edward Barrett Moulton, a wealthy landowner of Durham, England, on March 6, 1806, Elizabeth Barrett Moulton was a intelligent child, who did well in her Greek and Roman classic classes. At the age of fourteen she composed her first epic, The Battle of Marathon, which her father had privately printed. Six years later, at the age of twenty, she anonymously published An Essay On Mind, And Other Poems, that dryly conveyed the domination of the Pope's influence on the classics.

Browning's Early Years

In 1832 the Barrett family relocated to Sidmouth, Devonshire, where Elizabeth penned Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound. It wasn't until 1835, when the family finally came to settle in London, that Miss Barrett came in contact with the literary community. She quickly befriended them and was encouraged to publish her poetry more aggressively. The Seraphim and Other Poems, while it received good reviews, was not overly popular.

As her literary work load and activities increased, her heath was jeopardized, once weakened by a childhood riding accident. With ailing lungs she found herself to be a semi-invalid and took up residence in a sea resort in Torquay. There Elizabeth was traumatized by the drowning of her beloved brother Edward, from which she never completely recovered.

Browning's Work

In attempt to heal from the sorrow, she returned to London in 1841 and began working with Wordsworth and Leigh Hunt to modernize Chaucer. When Poems was published, Browning was honored by the rave reviews from Carlyle, Poe, and Lowell. She was most excited by a letter of praise that she received from Robert Browning, an unknown poet whose work impressed Miss Barrett. The two writers continued to communicate through script and in person that following summer. Forbidden to marry by her father, Elizabeth kept her budding romance hidden and were secretly married on September 12, 1846. The newly weds quickly left England and her father would never see her again. He passed on in 1857 never to have spoken again to his daughter.
