The novel by Bram Stoker, Dracula, begins with Jonathan Harker leaving his fiancee to help Count Dracula with the final steps of purchasing a house in the suburbs of London. Harker stays with Dracula but is soon a prisoner in his home. While looking for a way to escape, Harker comes upon Dracula, inside a coffin and appearing as if dead. Later that night, Dracula appears and Harker is alerted to the fact that Count Dracula is more than a mortal man.

The next day Harker witnesses Dracula leaving with many coffins going along with him. Dracula then boards a Russian schooner that is not seen again until it wrecked and abandoned off the coast of England. The town near the abandoned schooner, Whitby, is where Dracula is seen next. He begins to prey on Lucy and eventually bites her so many times that she becomes a vampire herself. Extensive entries in Dr. Seward's diary about the illness, death, and funeral of Lucy are prime examples of parts of the novel which do not deal with Dracula directly, but are important in understanding the effects of acts he commits, his intentions as a vampire, and his fiendish nature. "Her teeth, in the dim, uncertain light, seemed longer and sharper than they had been in the morning. In particular, by some trick of the light, the canine teeth looked longer and sharper than the rest." Lucy is turning into a vampire, which is the result of Count Dracula's assault on her. In this same entry, Dr. Harker writes that Lucy's wounds "on the throat had absolutely disappeared." Lucy is the townspeople's greatest fear as she preys upon children. Eventually the people of the town drive a stake through her heart and decapitate her in order to stop the killing of their children.

While Lucy is turning into a vampire, Harker marries his fiancee and the two of them head to England. As they discover what has happened to Lucy, they piece together that it was Dracula that was responsible for her death.
