Although he started out as strictly a horror writer, Stephen King has become at least as well known for his ability to create vibrant characters that enthrall his audience, no matter the context of the story. His most recent novel continues this pattern. The story is completely free of his horror-novel past, although it does feature his signature blend of the uncanny with the mundane.

The Kings Hero in 11/22/63
King's hero, Jake Epping, is a high school teacher in modern-day Maine. His friend, the local diner owner, shows him the time portal to 1958 located in his back room. No matter how long one spends in the past, he will always return to the present just 2 minutes later than he left. Making use of the portal, Jake takes on the task of preventing the 1963 Kennedy assassination. Of course, things are never as easy as they seem. The past resists change despite Jake's attempts and, to complicate things further, Jake falls in love with the charming Sadie Dunhill-who happens to live in the past.
Suspense in 11/22/63
King really knows how to build suspense. He also does a great job of making 1958 seem alive and yet infused with a nostalgic glow. His historical theories are the least successful part of the book, often seeming extraneous to the story-which is funny since they are the point of the whole plot. As with most of King's work, it is the characters that make it worth reading.
