Wish You Well by David Baldacci is a heartfelt tale of a twelve-year old girl and her struggle to survive the emotional devastation that has been thrust upon her. Louisa Mae Cardinal, the book's central character is the daughter of a well-known author. Together with her mother and her younger brother Oz, Lou happily lives out her life in New York. Although the family is poor and struggles to make ends meet, Lou is happy until a car accident kills her father and causes her mother to have a nervous breakdown. Unable to care for themselves or their mother, Lou and Oz move to southern Virginia to be raised by their great grandmother. Barely able to sustain herself, Lou's great grandmother now faces the challenge of raising two children, while Lou and Oz seek to put their lives back together. Although the transition is difficult for the children, ultimately they both begin to adapt to their new lives and their new home. Baldacci's work is easy to read and engaging. The story of Lou is one that any child, young or old, can understand.

Baldacci writes as though he himself is experiencing loss and change. This may be reflective of his own experiences as a child. The manner in which Baldacci relates the story is so emotional and compassionate that the reader finds it difficult to put the book down. This story should be recommended reading for all pre-teens. There are many themes present through out this tale, and lessons for all to see.
