Ernest Hemingway research papers give examples of the experiences of an author's life being mirrored in his poems, short stories and novels. Perhaps the most influential experience in Hemingway's life was World War I. One of Hemingway's earliest novels, The Sun Also Rises, is based on his life in Europe from 1924-25 and relays what actually took place between American and English expatriates traveling from Paris to Pamplona. The Sun Also Rises also conveys in brutally realistic descriptions the power and danger of bullfighting in Spain. The novel focuses on moral decadence by the Lost Generation; "You're an expatriate. You've lost touch with the soil Fake European standards have ruined you. You drink yourself to death. You become obsessed with sex. You spend all your time talking, not working. You're an expatriate, see? You hang around cafes". The beaten but moral hero, Robert Cohn, faithfully defends his beliefs for Lady Brett Ashley and his social cause. He sets out to prove that love did not die in WWI along with values. Cohn was ridiculed by offenders for his puristic mindsets and served as a reminder of American treachery.

The Characters in The Sun Also Rises

The male and female characters of The Sun Also Rises reflect the American treachery and have few guiding principles to shape their lives. The Sun Also Rises is not a novel or fiction that illustrates exemplary male/female relationships, but rather illuminates an era lost faith in humanity in the light of post-war societies in the following ways:

  • Brett engaged in promiscuity and Robert Cohn had an affair with Frances Clyne.
  • The women of the novel were stepping into societies new role for women as the liberated female.
  • Sexuality was just being introduced to society on the screen and the divorce rate had just hit the one million mark in America at the time the novel was published.
  • The character of Jake Barnes is used to illustrate a portion of society that was uncomfortable with this new dynamic between men and women.
  • To Jake and Mike Campbell, Brett Ashley is considered a casualty of war and the society that war produced.

In Hemingway's world, war was the loss of innocents for men and women, and himself.
